A circulad from the office of the Executive Secretary dated March 23 contains the list of federal, state and private universities currently allowed to issue PGD certificates to students in Nigeria.
Out of the 43 federal universities, 14 from the Northern part of Nigeria were approved by the commission for postgraduate programmes .
The commission hereby notifies the general public that only the following universities have the approval to offer post-graduate programmes at the Masters’ and PhD levels in Nigeria. They are
1. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi
2. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
3. Bayero University, Kano
4. Federal University of Technology, Minna
5. Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola
6. Nigeria Defence Academy, Kaduna
7. University of Abuja, Gwagwalada
8. University of Agriculture, Makurdi
9. University of Ilorin, Ilorin
10. University of Jos, Jos
11. University of Maiduguri, Maiduguri
12. Usmanu Dan Fodio University, Sokoto
13. Federal University, Lafia

14. Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna
Similarly, 13 state universities from the north were approved by the commission for post-graduate programmes out of the 48 state-owned universities in the country. The approved universities are :
1. Adamawa State University, Mubi
2. Benue State University, Makurdi
3. Kogi State University, Anyigba
4. Nasarawa State University, Keffi
5. Umar Musa Yar’Adua University, Katsina
6. Gombe State University, Gombe
7. Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai
8. Kano State University of Science and Technology
9. Kebbi State University of Science and Technology
10. Kwara State University, Malete
11. Kaduna State University, Kaduna
12. Bauchi State University, Gadau
13. Yobe State University, Damaturu
Meanwhile, only 8 universities out of 79 private universities were approved for post-graduate studies. The 8 institutions are:
1. African University of Science and Technology, Abuja
2. American University of Nigeria, Yola
3. Nigerian Turkish Nile University, Abuja
4. Al-hikmah University, Ilorin (MSc. Only)
5. Veritas University, Abuja
6. Al-Qalam University, Katsina
7.Baze University, Abuja
8. Salem University, Lokoja.
Employers of labour, educational institutions and other stakeholders are to note that only certificates issued by these universities for their approved programmes are valid for employment, further studies and other purposes,”said by the commission .
